Chelsea Handler is a Out Here Defending Child-Free Folks, and We’re Here For It

The comedian's new Netflix special dives deeper into why Handler says she's opting for dogs over kids.

Starting a family is a very personal decision, as it should be — especially for women, who, ya know, carry around a literal living thing inside of them for nine months. But oftentimes the message many hear, from friends, family members, and even governments, is that having kids isn’t simply an option, it’s expected, and those who don’t opt-in are wrong.

Thankfully, Chelsea Handler is here to say what the old schoolers don’t want to hear:

“It’s important to know when you don’t have the skills to raise a baby,” she starts, in a teaser clip for her upcoming Netflix special, called Revolution. “Instead of shaming people we should say, ‘Oh good, good for you for knowing you shouldn’t have a baby.’”

The sassy comedian stands up for those who choose to be child-free everywhere, by adding, how folks like her “should get a carbon credit for not polluting the mass population.”

Hilarious, but sincere, as a 2021 survey conducted by Michigan State University found that 1 in 4 couples opt to never have kids. Additionally, the survey found that these folks are perfectly happy with their decision, and more importantly, their lives as a result.

And women especially seem to benefit, with research showing that childless, unmarried women are actually happier than other people.

The 47-year-old former talk show host added more fuel to the fire, saying how she loves “fur” babies and that she’s rescued nine dogs in her lifetime, but “returned four” based on things just not working out — something you can’t exactly do when you have kids.

Handler split with fellow comedian Jo Koy in July of 2022, less than a year after they had started dating. While the breakup was a bummer, the Netflix teaser assures viewers there will be a child-free light at the end of the tunnel.

The star of Chelsea Lately isn’t the only big name in Hollywood choosing to live her life without offspring. Oprah revealed on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop podcast that she always knew being a parent wasn’t the right fit for her.

30-year old singer and actress Miley Cyrus has also decided she’s going child-free. Sure, things could change, but in an interview for Elle, she stated: “Until I feel like my kid would live on an earth with fish in the water, I’m not bringing in another person to deal with that.”

Sometimes however, celebrities choose to forgo conventional family life because of personal journeys that change over time. Hollywood favorite Jennifer Aniston was always seen as a child-free-by-choice kinda woman, but in a recent interview for Allure, she revealed that she had tried going through the IVF process, and it became so overwhelming, she chose to focus on her wellness and career instead.

“…if it wasn’t for going through that, I would’ve never become who I was meant to be,” she explains, while adding that she has “zero regrets” about her previous decisions.

There will always be people who feel they need to stick their nose in other peoples’ business (**cough cough** people can enjoy Disney without kids too **cough**), but for those looking to keep their lives child-free, we’re happy to have support behind us from big names in Hollywood.

Revolution is set to air on Dec. 27 exclusively on Netflix.
