Cheetos’ Sweetos (and other chips we can’t believe exist)

Neon-orange fingered Cheetos lovers, get your sweet teeth ready, because in just one month’s time Frito-Lay’s Cheetos will unveil to the world its Cheetos Sweetos, a.k.a cinnamon sugar Cheetos.

While Cheetos hasn’t previously launched a sweet snack, Frito-Lay, Lay’s potato chips has dabbled into desserts before, with its chocolate dipped chips.

Sweetos will be available as a limited time offering, and is part of a delightful new snack trend in which distributors roll out odd or limited flavors — like the Lay’s Do Us a Flavor contest which produced both Wasabi Ginger and Cappuccino chips.

Seriously you guys, there is no shortage of creative potato chip flavors on this planet — the adventurous snacker can nosh on Cajun Squirrel in the UK  and then head over to China to chow down on Pringles Tandoori Chicken. That said, come my fellow intrepid eaters, let us embark on a virtual world tour of the world’s strangest potato chip flavors.

Europe

There are myriad meat-flavored chips in the UK, but Haggis & Cracked Black Pepper may just be the wackiest flavor. Though, Yorkshire Crisps Lamb and Mint places a close second.

Crazy crisps aren’t just specific to the UK. Bizarre chip flavors can be found all across Europe! You’ll see Spaghetti Bolognese Lays in France, Chicken and Thyme chips in Belgium, and Russian Caviar and Cool American Doritos in Iceland.

The Americas

While the South American chips scene boasts flavors like Beef Carpaccio and Mayonnaise, there is an almost unending supply of silly potato chip varieties in the United States. Lays, a company that is ALL about playing with flavors, gave the world Sriracha and Chicken and Waffles, perhaps its silliest flavor yet. But one Louisiana potato chip brand, Zapp’s, takes the cake with off-the-wall flavors like Spicy Cajun Crawtator (crawfish) and Gator Tators (yes, potato chips that are supposed to taste like alligators, that’s exactly right).

Asia

With chip flavors from borscht to seaweed, Asia is keeping its snack game TIGHT. But, the sweet and tart taste of Blueberry as a salty potato chip beats out ever other chip on the continent. Never underestimate the power of a well-placed fruit flavor, you guys.

Other wild flavors include Mango Lays, Octopus and Salmon Sushi.

Australia

The Australian food paste, Vegemite, has been reimagined as a potato chip. Because everyone knows what’s up Down Under.

Africa

Simba Chips in South Africa come in a variety of flavors like smoked beef, chutney and monkey gland. You guys, breathe, these chips have nothing to do with actual monkeys! Monkey Gland is a popular sauce in South Africa.

We’re all about these out-there snacks, and hope some of them make it to a supermarket near us in the future. Until then, we’ll always have Sweetos…
