Charlie Puth Attempts Twitter Fight With Selena Gomez, Backs Down

He’s still mad about something that happened in 2018, apparently.

Charlie Puth is desperately trying to stir the pot with Selena Gomez — and no one is having it.

The “One Call Away” singer seemingly referenced his complicated past with the Only Murders in the Building star in a since-deleted tweet about his 2018 hit “Attention.” The song was widely speculated to be about Gomez, who Puth was previously rumored to be dating following the release of their joint single “We Don’t Talk Anymore” in 2016.

While Gomez denied the dating rumors, Puth happily entertained the speculation. In an interview with Billboard, newly single Puth admitted to doing some “shady things” while making “We Don’t Talk Anymore.”

“I don’t kiss and tell, but the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes,” Puth told the outlet.

“And that’s what was happening [with Gomez]. Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up. I’m trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in — what I was getting myself into,” he continued.

That seemed to be the end of that, but then Puth resurfaced the hotly debate regarding the genesis of “Attention” on Twitter earlier this week. It appears Puth had a bit of buyer’s remorse because he took it down minutes later — not before a fan could screenshot it, though!

“Attention is about what you think it’s about,” he tweeted.

Fans rushed to Gomez’s defense, citing Puth’s lyrics as “borderline sexual harassment.” In the song, he sings “I know that dress is karma, perfume regret / You got me thinking ’bout when you were mine, oh / And now I’m all up on ya, what you expect?/ But you’re not coming home with me tonight.”

Another Twitter user said Puth is clearly still “hurt that [Gomez] didn’t liked you the way you wanted” with a screenshot of his “you’re insane” verse.

Puth’s pot-stirring tweet comes days before the March 31 release of his new song and music video for “That’s Not How This Works” with Sabrina Carpenter.

Gomez hasn’t commented on the “Attention” rumors.
