Charlie Hunnam got married in Vegas at 18, and aww to be young and madly in love
We’ve all done things we look back on later in life with a “lesson learned” kind of attitude. For Charlie Hunnam, that was marrying in Vegas when he was 18.
Speaking to the Associated Press recently, the British actor recalled a time in 1999 when he married actress Katharine Towne — just three weeks after meeting her at a Dawson’s Creek audition and falling “madly in love” for the first time. (Also? It was his first time in Las Vegas, so a night of new experiences, really.)
“We came to Vegas because, in our 18-year-old minds, we thought, ‘What if we never see each other again? Let’s get married and then we’ll have to see each other again even if it’s just to get divorced,’” he remembers of the logic behind the former couple’s decision to tie the knot before he returned to England.
"So we came to Vegas, but I couldn't even get a drink so I didn't think we'd actually be able to get married," the actor told the AP. "And then at two in the morning, we got married."
Okay, this sounds crazy, but remember being 18 and in love and feeling like you invented love? I mean, we get it, Charlie.

We can’t even hate. This is extremely sweet in a way, and hey, Rachel and Ross did the Vegas-wedding thing, guys! Sometimes it just feels right, and when it turns out not to be right, that is what annulments and divorces are for, right? Or something.
IRL human Hunnam — who’s 37 now and has been dating Morgana McNelis for over a decade — totally attributes his own failed marriage to being young and in love and not necessarily the relationship itself, though. He says that even though the exes went through “three terrible, painful, expensive years” following their nuptials, there is an upside.
“I got the cats at the end of it, so there was a small victory,” he jokes.
Oh, Charlie. Never change. We can’t wait to see you in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword — is it May 12 yet?
