We need a Golden Ticket to this “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” Broadway musical

If you’ve been missing the magical dreamland of chocolate waterfalls, everlasting gobstoppers, strangely cute looking Oompa-Loompa’s, sweet Charlie Bucket, and awe-inspiring Willa Wonka, help is on the way! The Broadway premiere of Roald Dahl’s treasured Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is finally coming to New York in the Spring of 2017.

The delicious musical already had a great run in London’s West End, where it was directed by Sam Mendes (yes, the same Sam Mendes who brought us Skyfall and Spectre). It was nominated for Best New Musical at the Laurence Olivier Awards which is basically the highest praise you can get in the UK theater scene.

The Broadway production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is anticipated to be another showstopper, with Tony award winner Jack O’Brien taking the directing chair. If that name sounds familiar, it might be because he’s the guy responsible for stage productions of HairsprayThe Full Monty, and more. Jack released a statement to The New York Times, stating that the Broadway production will directly resemble the 1971 film adaptation, as America’s connection is to Gene Wilder’s “slyly wicked” portrayal of Willy Wonka.

As for the music, we’re in equally amazing hands. Marc Shaiman, who has several Oscar nominations along with a Grammy and a Tony under his belt for Hairspray, did the score for Charlie, and received overwhelming acclaim for the show in London. A British Theatre review of the West End production said the music is “like a box of chocolate selections, the songs they provide each bring their own unique pleasure, some sweet, some brittle, some dark, some gooey.” We are now hungry and desperate to get the soundtrack!

There’s no word yet on who will play Willy Wonka or Charlie Bucket, but we have faith that Broadway gods will deliver the goods. If you want to be the first to know when tickets for Charlie go on sale, you can sign up for email updates here. Do it!
