The story behind that new Charli XCX collab

When we first listened to Daft Punk’s last album, Random Access Memories, one of the standout tracks was “Giorgio by Moroder,” which detailed the legacy and influences of the Italian producer Giorgio Moroder. A mainstay in dance and disco music all throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he stepped out of the spotlight as popular tastes shifted out of that style, until fellow Euro dance counterparts Daft Punk gave him a platform to reach a new audience.

He hasn’t squandered the opportunity, and has enlisted a who’s who of modern pop music to collaborate with him on his “comeback” album, Déjà Vu. Among the tracks already formally and informally released: the title track with Sia, “Right Here, Right Now” with Kylie Minogue, and a cover of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner,” with none other than Britney Spears on the vocals. Yet another collab leaked this week: “Diamonds,” with Charli XCX singing and speaking over a thumping, driving beat.

XCX broke into the hot charts with “Boom Clap” last year, and it’s not a surprise that her signature, sticky sweet vocals are on one of the most anticipated albums of the year. And there’s only more audio goodness coming our way: Déjà Vu is also slated to have collabs with Mikky Ekko, Foxes, and Kelis, ensuring that there’ll be something for everyone.

“Diamonds” is, unlike another famous “Diamonds,” an upbeat, lovestruck tune. There’s nothing grandiose about the song, but it’s perfect for those moments where you’re just looking to get down and sing along to something catchy, a little bit mindless, and a lot of fun. Here’s to hoping the rest of Déjà Vu, which drops on June 12, is as jam-worthy as everything we’ve already heard. (Image via.)
