Charli XCX released her album today. . .and we’re in love

Hooray for the pop rock revival! Pop newcomer, Charli XCX, officially released-her pop crossover LP, Sucker in the United States today.

You may know her from singing the infectious chorus on Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” and for lending her voice to Icona Pop’s “I Love It,” but Charli XCX is finally taking a claim of her own. Even before today’s album drop, Charli XCX received a considerable amount of attention for feel-good pop songs like “Boom, Clap” and “Break the Rules“. No doubt, Charli XCX certainly has a knack for making catchy tunes, but Sucker proves that she’s a force to be reckoned with.

True to Charli XCX, all of the songs on Sucker are unapologetic and loud, but don’t let that fool you. The album bleeds into other genres, making every song a sweet surprise. “Body of my Own” has a pop-rock feel with guitar riffs fit for an old Bloc Party song (circa “Banquet“in 2005). On the other hand, one of her slower songs, “Die Tonight” has a bit of a Gwen Stefani, Santigold vibe to it. Needless to say, we’re really loving the versatility on this album.

We’re not the only ones in love with Sucker. Her album received rave reviews from Rolling Stone who claims she is “[reinventing] pop punk on her loud, fun ridiculously catchy new LP.” Billboard even spoke to her new-found star power, saying “Charli’s voice is already among the most ubiquitous of the year. But Sucker is likely to confirm that she’s one of pop’s biggest new stars—and biggest personalities.”

Meanwhile, here’s what Time had to say: “While Sucker contains a dressing room’s worth of new styles and a Top 40 playlist’s worth of pop moves, Charli XCX is a smart enough songwriter to make them her own, and magnetic enough a presence to make that a winning prospect.”

At 22, Charli seems to be on the fast track to pop royalty. We can’t wait to see what she has in store for us in the future. But for now, let’s just shut up and enjoy some “Boom, Clap”. It’s Monday, after all.
