Chairlift is back with a new tune that’s deeply stuck in our heads
If you don’t know Chairlift by name, perhaps you’ve heard of a track on the Beyoncé album called “No Angel”? That’s right. The Brooklyn-based synth pop duo (names Patrick Wimberly and Caroline Polachek) were introduced to Beyoncé thanks to their good friend, Solange (y’know, Beyoncé’s little sister). When Beyoncé proclaimed her love for Chairlift, studio arrangements were made and voila — “No Angel” was born. You also might remember them from their VERY popular song “Bruises.”
Well now, after a three-year hiatus, the duo is back with a scintillating new track. Their latest, “Ch-Ching,” is nothing short of a magical, musical onion of sorts. The disjointed layers of sound are met with an ever-so infectious “Ch-ching” that you’re gonna wanna sing out loud to everyone, including your dog. It’s also the perfect song for disorderly dancing and for driving around after a nice relaxing meal on a Friday night.
“It’s been a while since we’ve released anything and it’s always sort of a reinvention at the time” Caroline told Zane Lowe at Beats One.
“This record for us is very much about the experience of living in New York, which pretty hit us pretty hard after getting back from the last tour. Patrick and I have lived here for 10 years now, and it’s such a multi-dimensional place,” she said in the interview. “[Ch-Ching] is sort of about that feeling of getting lucky and not really realizing what just hit you, and rolling with it…that’s the kind of moment people move to New York for — to be handed an opportunity that’s bigger than you are and to roll with it”.
The duo have been working on their music in an old pharmaceutical factory, and have since made it their musical mainstay. Dubbed the “CRC” (the building still had its old lettering from the “Colleague Resource Center” that once existed), the factory seems to be some sort of magical house of haunts with “creepy halls and old science labs.” Considering the fact that Halloween is right around the corner, it sounds like a place we wanna visit.
Chairlift happened to release the vid for their new tune today, and yep, we heart it. Ch-ching.
