Cersei’s new crown on “Game of Thrones” was designed for a special reason

We’re not the type of people who shy away from a challenge, which is exactly why we love Game of Thrones as much as we do. Every single episode is basically like a game of “Where’s Waldo?” – except Waldo just so happens to be a bunch of symbolic details that reveal more about the fictional world we can’t get enough of. This is especially the case when it comes to the costumes and accessories our favorite characters wear.
“Costumes are so linked to the characters, and jewelry often tells a story about the [them],” GoT costume designer Michele Clapton told Vulture. Lucky for us, Cersei Lannisters’s intricate costumes (and crowns) aren’t exceptions.
After ensuring that her enemies go down in flames (literally) and simultaneously destroying everything she cared about, Cersei (played by Lena Headey) was able to sit on the Iron Throne. For this significant moment during the Season 6 finale, Clapton wanted to make sure Cersei’s crown spoke volumes.
“I chose to make it in silver with just wisps of gold to try to show her isolation, her mental disentangling from her family. There is no reference to [her late husband, Robert] Baratheon; there is no need anymore. She doesn’t have to try and prove a link,” explained Michele. “The center of the crown is the lion sigil abstracted — its mane represents the Iron Throne, her desire. She has made it her own — she is reborn.”
On the flip side, there are times when Cersei wears more jewelry – but that’s only when she’s not feeling empowered and wants to display her status. Rather than sporting heavy jewelry like Tommen (whose responsibilities were literally weighing on him), only a simple silver chain can be seen around Cersei’s neck in the finale. “She is dead inside,” stated Clapton. “There can now be a clarity to her desire: power, the throne, on her terms.”
Plus, when you compare Cersei’s new crown to her old Baratheon one, you’ll notice quite a difference:
Cersei’s previous crown symbolized that she was married to Robert Baratheon. It featured the antlers that are part of his family crest, which tied Cersei to his name, his power, and his identity. On the other hand, the crown from the Season 6 finale is all hers and represents that she’s her own person with her own power.
Now we want to re-watch the entire series and only pay attention to the jewelry.
