There’s a trailer for Telemundo’s ‘Celia’ series and we are all about it

Whether you’re a salsa fan or not, you’ve probably heard of Celia Cruz, the late, great queen of the genre and one of the world’s most distinguished and well-known Cuban Americans. Someone like that probably deserves a biopic and luckily for us, one is on the way. This fall, Spanish language channel Telemundo will premiere Celia, a new scripted series about the singer’s life that will introduce the songstress to a new audience while giving her most hardcore fans a glimpse into Cruz’s early life.

Telemundo just released the first trailer from the show, and we have to say, it looks amazing. According to Telemundo senior vice president Glenda Pacanins, the series will not only “[delve] into a side of the young Celia that most people probably aren’t aware of,” but also give viewers a chance to witness the racial- and gender-based barriers Cruz overcame to climb to the top of the then-male-dominated world of salsa.

“Yes, she was incredibly talented and driven, but she also didn’t know what she was getting herself into,” Pacanins told Billboard. “There was a stigma at that time of women participating in the entertainment industry—they were perceived as easy or as someone who would walk down a bad path in life, so it’s interesting because it sets the stage for the woman that Celia would eventually become.”
