Celebs are passionately reacting to the Senate’s silencing of Elizabeth Warren
You may have heard that Elizabeth Warren, one of the most passionate and galvanizing voices in the Democratic party, was silenced by senate Republicans last night during a debate over Attorney General nominee and current Alabaman senator Jeffrey Sessions. Naturally, the internet is exploding, and celebrity twitter is getting vocal as well. Here’s how celebs are reacting to Elizabeth Warren’s silencing.
But first, here’s some context in case you haven’t heard. Warren, who is fiercely opposed to Sessions as AG, was reading a quote from Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow, when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell shut her down, citing a rarely-invoked rule that prohibits disparaging another senator. Fellow Republicans backed up McConnell and voted to silence Warren for the rest of the nomination process 49 to 43, according to Bloomberg.
McConnell said of his actions, “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.” Now, we have the hashtags #shepersists and #letlizspeak.

So, what was the quote? Warren was reading from a 1986 letter from King, who expressed disapproval over Session’s nomination to become a federal judge. King wrote, “Mr. Sessions’s conduct as U.S attorney from his politically motivated voting fraud prosecutions to his indifference toward criminal violations of civil rights laws indicates that he lacks the temperament, fairness and judgment to be a federal judge.”
