Selena Gomez seems like she’s at the point in her life where she’ll look back and say, “Yeah, that was a good year.” She is very in love with her boyfriend, she’s honest about and proud of her 90-day stay in rehab, and her vulnerability only seems to escalate her to higher levels of fame.

In her new interview with InStyle, Gomez got real about those things and more, but one that really struck us is her discovery of the power of “No.”

As women who work and who aspire to be #GirlBosses, there’s this assumption that if you want to get ahead in life that you must be agreeable, amenable, and always saying “Yes.” But that’s not always sustainable, and we are applauding Gomez on how she’s putting the power of “No” into action.

Psychology Today says that Gomez’s technique of “let me sleep on it” is fantastic. They call it the “I’ll think about it” — which they say gives you the power in the situation and allows your eventual “no” to be couched in thoughtful and grounded decision making.

Never underestimate the power of a respectful “No.”
