Why Selena Gomez thinks people wouldn't want to date her makes us sad
Dating is tough as is, and it’s even more difficult if your name is Selena Gomez. Like, you know, THE Selena Gomez. Many recognize the talented singer for her on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bieber, and now that they’re presumably off-again, she opened up to Vogue Australia about how difficult it is to maintain any type of relationship when all eyes are on you.
“I think people would think it’s kind of dumb [to date me],” Gomez said to the magazine. “Nobody would want to throw themselves into that situation where it was so heightened publicly, like, why would they?”
It makes sense for Gomez to feel a little tired of the process. After all, almost every interaction she’s had with Bieber in the past few years has been examined under the microscope. Surely, even if she wanted to maintain a friendship with her ex, the tabloids might spin any kind of interaction to be something a little more newsworthy. Ugh.
“For a while my private life was the most talked about thing,” Gomez noted. “Nobody really knows everything and they can only assume. You want to do what you love but all this other stuff overshadows it so it makes it a little harder for people to take me seriously.”
Gomez has been doing a lot of Bieber-free things recently — for example, she debuted a collection for the Louis Vuitton’s new Series V campaign (which included big, furry hats) and of course, she’s always working on new music. She’s currently playing a few dates overseas in Australia and New Zealand for her Revival tour, which ends in Mexico near the end of December.
So, from here on out, let’s remember to appreciate Gomez for her talented projects, and focus just a tiny bit less on who she might choose to date. The girl is busy enough as-is — trying to protect any new guy from the tabloids is a full time job she doesn’t necessarily want to sign up for.
