Selena Gomez apologized to Justin Bieber, because it's not too late to say sorry
It seems like a million years ago that we were all fangirling out over the relationship between Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, two of the biggest pop stars of their age. For many, it was like the second coming of Britney/Justin (a classic early aughts celebrity pairing that will always remain near and dear to our hearts, matching all-denim outfits be damned).
Unfortunately, thanks to recent Instagram beef between Selena and Justin, it seems like any hope of a reunion is basically shattered.
It all started earlier this week when Justin, as we’re all wont to do when we’re in a fun new relationship, uploaded tons of pics of himself with his rumored new boo Sofia Richie to his Instagram account. Many fans were not thrilled about the bombardment of cute and couple-y photos of the two and were even more peeved when Justin responded to the hate by threatening to privatize his account if his fans didn’t stop throwing shade.
At that point, surprising all of us who have known her to stay far away from drama, Selena jumped into the fray and actually commented on the photo where Justin threatened to privatize his account.
“If you can’t handle the hate,” Selena wrote. “Then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol. It should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you.”
Needless to say, most fans were on Selena’s side. The hashtag #SelenaEndedJustinParty (like the #KimEndedTaylorParty before it) quickly began trending all over Twitter, with fans celebrating Selena’s apparent “takedown” of Justin.
Justin responded with Insta comments of his own, insinuating that SelGo had only “used [him] for attention,” urging his fans to be kind, and reiterating that he loves his Beliebers. Oy.
This all threw the collective Jelena-loving internet into a total tailspin. It was definitely surprising that Selena went out of her way to comment on the photo, but Selena is well-known as a celeb who truly adores her fanbase so it seems likely that she was just upset that Justin seemed to be “shading” them in this way – especially since she posted a ton of really sweet photos dedicated to how much she loves her own fans shortly after commenting on Justin’s photo.
Regardless, Selena clearly regretted her decision to involve herself, because she took to Snapchat late last night to offer up what seems to be an apology directed at Justin.
“What I said was selfish and pointless,” read Selena’s very simple text against a black background.
Unfortunately, it was too late. Justin had already gone ahead and deleted his Instagram account in the aftermath of the whole debacle. It’s sad that all of this drama is unfolding in a very public way, but it’s important to remember that both Justin and Selena are only human – they’re entitled to make rash decisions (or Instagram comments) that they later regret.
Of course, we hope that they can put the whole thing behind them and that Justin will come back to Instagram soon enough, though of course he should take all the time away that he needs for self-care. He’s had a rocky road with his very passionate fan base, even announcing that he’d no longer be taking fan photos earlier this year.
