After years of wondering and forming conspiracy theories and mistaking one for the other, we can all rest easy. We finally have the answer to one of life’s biggest questions: Ed Sheeran is actually an alternative identity of Rupert Grint.

We’ve long thought that this was the case, and certainly the fact that Rupert Grint gets confused for Ed Sheeran all the time was significant evidence in favor of this theory.

But we’re happy to finally have Rupert Grint confirm that he’s been moonlighting as the singing sensation all along. (Even if he was just joking around, as Grint is well-known to do.)

Fans gathered for MTV’s After Hours to see Ed Sheeran perform…only to be treated to Rupert Grint’s confession that Ed Sheeran was a character he made up to stretch himself after Harry Potter.

He continued with some very specific details about Sheeran. And, to be honest, he says it so convincingly, there’s a part of us that actually wonders if it might be true.

So there you have it. The era of Ed Sheeran is at an end.

If you feel like having a good cry and mourning the loss of one of our favorite artists, you can see the full confession alone.

But be prepared, it’s shocking.

We can’t believe that we spent so much time believing in Ed Sheeran, when we all should’ve been believing in Rupert instead. It seems there’s a lot more “shapes of Sheeran” than we originally expected.

Okay, truth? We totally know Grint is joking. It’s just such a delightful joke, we like pretending it’s true.
