3 Oscar winners who remembered to thank their parents
While a few celebs brought parents as dates to the Academy Awards on Sunday night (Lin Manuel Miranda, for example), some got the chance to thank them a little more publicly—while accepting Oscars. Sure, we get that it’s important to mention your agent, publicist, fellow nominees, and co-stars, but there’s something about acknowledging parents that really, well, gets to us. Here are a few of our favorite thank yous from the show.
1“A special thank you tonight to my mother, Skippy O’Connell, who 39 years ago got me a job in sound. And when I asked her how I could thank her, she told me, ‘You can work hard. You can work really hard, and someday you can win yourself an Oscar, and you can stand on the stage, and you can think me in front of the whole world.’ Mom, I know you’re looking down on me tonight, so thank you.”
—Kevin O’Connell, during his acceptance for Best Sound Mixing for Hacksaw Ridge
2“My parents—I’m so thankful that God chose you to bring me into this world.”
—Viola Davis, during her acceptance for Best Supporting Actress for Fences
3“I want to thank my mom who is amazing and my date tonight and she let me quit the JCC soccer league to be in a school musical so this is dedicated to all the kids who sing in the rain and all the moms who let them! Thank you very much, I love you mom!”
—Benj Pasek, during his acceptance for Best Original Song for La La Land
