Nicki Minaj is starting a charity to pay off fans' student loan debt
Everyone already knows that Nicki Minaj is a queen. Now we all know that she’s a generous queen, too. According to an Instagram post yesterday, Nicki Minaj is starting a charity to pay off fans’ student loan debt. The singer’s already been taking care of her fans’ financial needs when it comes to their education. This all started because a fan tweeted at Minaj, asking for help to pay tuition, sort of as a joke after the singer offered to buy her fans plane tickets to join a contest.
In case you missed it, Minaj wrote to the fan and student last week:
“Show me straight A’s that I can verify w/ur school and I’ll pay it. Who wants to join THAT contest?!?! Dead serious. Shld I set it up?”
Obviously, a bunch of people wanted in and tweeted their needs. For every Twitter request for tuition help, Minaj asked the fan to show proof of their grades and the bills directly from the school, or some other kind of proof, via a direct message before adding them to her list. After an hour fielding requests, Minaj called it off (temporarily), writing, “Let me make those payments tmrw then see if I have any money left. I’ll do some more in a month or 2.”
Although some students asked for their loans or tuition balances to be paid off, others simply asked for a few hundred bucks for books. As anyone who went to college knows, books are often the worst part and really cut into your grocery money. It’s amazing that Minaj is using her money and influence to help people out like that.
In her Instagram post yesterday, Minaj posted a screenshot of an email confirming that the money she pledged to her fans, totaling $18,000, has already been sent out.
Minaj hasn’t confirmed any details yet about the official charity, but starting a foundation will be way easier than digging through replies on social media. Although if you have some debt and good grades, it’s worth keeping an eye on her account next month, since she promised to do it again. And we know Nicki keeps her word.
