Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks are ready to send checks to Oprah’s presidential campaign
Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks are joining the ranks of stars who are totally on board with Oprah 2020. The veteran actors stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show after the Golden Globes and discussed Winfrey’s powerful speech.
“You were in the room obviously when Oprah, our future president …” DeGeneres said as applause broke out. “Thank you. And our future vice president,” Streep added, motioning to Hanks. “Where do I send the check?” she joked.
“You realize how we thirst for that. We really want that kind of elevated, aspirational, can-do, optimistic attachment to the principles of our country,” Streep said in the video at top.
“She did part the waters there,” Hanks said, joking that Winfrey’s speech was possibly heaven-sent. “It was very, very impressive.”
The actor, who co-stars with Streep for the very first time in The Post, also commented on that now-viral moment when he played bartender during the Globes. “She’s on antibiotics because she’s getting over the flu so she couldn’t have one,” Hanks taunted Streep. “But I was at a table where somebody who I love very much … I was told to go get martinis,” he said, revealing that Steven Spielberg was one of his thirsty tablemates.
“I have never been more nervous carrying something through a crowded place,” he joked of walking around with the precarious tray.
During their first joint Ellen appearance, the talk show host also had the two award-winning actors recite lines from each other’s most famous roles. Turns out, Streep would make a mean Forrest Gump, while Hanks’s Miranda Priestly is on-point.
