Matt Bomer opened up about the "blow up" he had with his parents after coming out
For many, the act of coming out is a tough one. When you’re in Hollywood, there’s additional pressure, since your announcement will likely make headlines. Matt Bomer admitted his parents “blew up” after coming out to them during a revealing interview with MR PORTER, and we can’t even imagine how hard it must have been.
You might know Bomer best for his roles in Magic Mike, American Horror Story, and The Last Tycoon. But Bomer credits his first role as “pretending to be straight” for his conservative and very religious family. While playing the part for many years, he first came out to his brother, who assumed he was joking.
Two years later, Bomer came out to his parents by letter.
After six months of total silence, he went home and found things to be incredibly rocky.
Thirteen years have passed since, and the actor admits that his relationship with his parents is a little better.
Bomer came out to his fans in 2012, and did it during an acceptance speech at the Desert AIDS Project’s Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. At that point, he had been quietly married to Simon Halls, a publicist, for a year.
It’s so great that Bomer shared his story — even the tough parts. He’s proof that it’s never easy to come out, especially when you don’t have accepting parents, but that life can truly get better from there.
