Feminism. It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot. While we strive to make our conversations surrounding this word more inclusive and intersectional, there are a few things to remember when it comes to working towards a truly feminist society — specifically in terms of who feminism needs to serve the most. Lorde knows what we’re talking about.

Specifically, during an interview with 60 MinutesLorde shooketh us with her wisdom and grace when she explained what she believes feminism should accomplish.

In the interview, Lorde talks about choosing her name (and how she added the “e” to sound more feminine) before explaining who she thinks feminism needs to serve the most. The singer states,

She goes on to say that no one needs to fight for her to have an okay life — she’ll be fine. But there are women in other situations who don’t have a voice, or who have a voice and don’t have anybody listening. Those are the women who need feminism the most.

Not only does Lorde nail what intersectional feminism is all about, she does it concisely and eloquently. Let us not forget that the singer is only 20!

We’re thankful we have Lorde helping us fight the good fight.
