10 years ago, the world was introduced to Chris Crocker. Best known as the “Leave Britney Alone” guy, Crocker cried to his webcam that the media should let Britney Spears live her life and stop scrutinizing her. Crocker’s impassioned plea immediately became a viral sensation and an early internet meme.

The permanence of this meme makes it hard to believe that Crocker’s video was posted 10 years ago.

Crocker is now 29-years-old and says that while the meme made a lot of people laugh, the inspiration for the video was the emotional pain he was experiencing in his own life.

The public may have thought the video was the work of parody or just the musings of a silly obsessed Britney fan, but Crocker says that couldn’t be further from the truth.

We feel for Crocker, that in his moment of darkness, the world rallied around him as a joke. It’s also rare to hear the story of life after viral fame, and Crocker is here to say it wasn’t always a walk in the park.

In a separate video he revealed that in the last 10 years, he’s learned several things about “fame.”

Do not let the things people say about you online, get to you,” he explains in the video, “I was dealing with a lot in my family, and knew that if I tried to explain that, nobody would listen to me. Instead what I decided to do was, if they think I’m a joke, I’ll act like a joke, but that didn’t help me in the long run. We forget that the things we post online can last for a long time, here we are 10 years later, still talking about this, definitely be cautious when you post things.”

This goes to show that you never know the reality of the person whose face is shared all over social media.
