Julia Roberts is a Hollywood legend for a reason, and today she gave us another reason to love her. She reminded us how a common question we ask women (famous and pedestrian alike) is casually sexist. Roberts recently celebrated a milestone birthday — She turned 50 on October 28th and told InStyle with confidence, “I always love my birthday. [I celebrate] with open arms and gratitude…There’s nothing different about this birthday than any other one.”
Roberts added that recently she’s been bothered by reporters asking her about the upcoming birthday as if it’s something she should fear or brace herself for.
It’s true, women are often asked about milestone birthdays more often than men as if women should approach them with reservation. Ageism and sexism, unfortunately, go hand-in-hand — especially in Hollywood, where men are given more freedom to age in front of the camera in a way that women aren’t.
Roberts spends the rest of the insightful InStyle interview doling out other bits of wisdom like her keys to a happy life, which are: “Marry the right person, give birth to a redhead, and have great girlfriends.”
She also joked about seeing tabloids with her face on them as she waits in line at the grocery store. “There is an odd occasion where I’m waiting and I’m looking around and I’m like, ‘What?!’ And [I] turn around to the man behind me and go, ‘Not true, sir!’”
