We are sad to say that famed actor John Heard has passed away. He was 71. John Heard is probably best known to many of us as Kevin’s adorably clueless dad in Home Alone. The actor was found in Palo Alto, California. He was recovering from a minor surgery on his back. Luckily, as of right now there is no foul play suspected. Though he had an acting career that spanned 4 decades, to 90s kids (and let’s face it, anyone who loves Christmas movies) he will always be Macaulay Culkin’s dad in Home Alone who somehow managed to forget his young son at home, and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York when he has his wallet taken by the precocious Kevin.

Aside from the Home Alone franchise, John Heard also starred in other major Hollywood movies.

His career was especially big in the ’80s and ’90s, when he worked in The Pelican Brief and Deceived with Goldie Hawn. He played Tom Hanks’s toy company co-worker and romantic rival in the film Big, as well as the man caught in a love triangle with Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey’s characters in Beaches (ironically also named John). He was also in the 2000s comedy White Chicks, starring Shawn and Marlon Wayans.

In addition to being in over 200 films, Heard also had a career on television.

He was nominated for a Emmy award for his storyline on The Sopranos, where he played a police detective who fed information to Tony Soprano. He was also on Battlestar Galactica. John Heard also appeared on Broadway several times, including a revival of the Tennessee Williams play The Glass Menagerie as the Gentleman Caller opposite actress Jessica Tandy (of Driving Miss Daisy fame.) John Heard has had quite a career, and it’s a shame for the entertainment world that the actor has passed away. For anyone who knew him, an even greater loss. Our hearts go out to his family.
