Over the last few years, Janelle Monáe has been everywhere. In addition to having starring roles in two of the biggest films of the year, Hidden Figures and Moonlight, the “Tightrope” singer has been speaking out about feminism and women’s issues, especially as legislation continues to threaten women’s access to healthcare.

Monáe appears on the cover of Marie Claire’s “fresh faces” issue, which hits stands on April 18th, and she opened up to the magazine about the issues women are currently facing and the frustration many women feel about the control men — especially in power —  have over these issues.

Monáe, who spoke at the Women’s March on Washington in January, has also been vocal about ending the stigma women still face over menstruation. She tweeted:

Monáe is finding power in using her voice. She said, “We have to realize our power and our magic. Because I am all about black-girl magic, even though I’m standing with all women. But this year? This year, I am so carefree black girl.”

Janelle is such a positive role model for women everywhere. She’s brilliant, talented, and never afraid to speak her mind. We’re so glad she continues to take a stand!
