Ariel Winter, of the multiple-award winning series Modern Family, has made the decision to defer her enrollment to college for one year. The actress, told E! News at the Emmys Casting Nominees Reception Thursday night, “Unfortunately this year, due to production schedule, I have to start next year, So I will be starting as a [UCLA] Bruin next year.” Desipte this one year hiccup, E! reports that when she does attend university she plans to study political science.

This decision totally makes sense — a lot of people take a year off after finishing their high school education to travel or even explore other options that don’t involve college (after all, college isn’t for everyone).

On the selfish side, it’s nice for fans of Modern Family that the wise-cracking, low-key nerdy Alex Dunphy will bet a the top of her game. Season 8 of Modern Family premieres on September 23rd, 2016 with an episode titled “A Tale of Three Cities.” The series will pick up in Alex’s second year of college at Caltech — so even if Ariel Winter isn’t doing the college thing, her character is! Whatever Winter’s decision, she’s an intelligent young woman who is making her own decisions. You go, Ariel!
