On Tuesday we had to say goodbye to Alan Thicke, who died of a heart attack while he was playing hockey with his son. Thicke’s death came as a shock to his family, since they had just spent Thanksgiving together, and no one saw this coming. He was only 69 years old, and he leaves behind his wife, three sons, and many loved ones, including his fans.
Thicke was best known for his role as the psychiatrist father Jason Seaver in the beloved ’80s sitcom Growing Pains. He was everyone’s favorite dad — supportive, funny, and always loving. He was even given the nickname America’s Dad, and TV Guide named Dr. Jason Seaver as number 37 on the list of “50 Greatest TV Dads.” In 1988 he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role on Growing Pains.
Long after his reign on Growing Pains ended, Thicke was still widely loved across the country. He was a songwriter, a talk show host, and an avid watcher of hockey. Since we learned of his untimely death, the cast of Growing Pains has come forward on social media to pay their respects and trade fond memories of Thicke.
Joanna Kerns played Thicke’s wife in the show, and she told actor Daniel Franzese on Twitter how much she appreciated the role Thicke played in her life.
Kirk Cameron played Thicke’s oldest son on Growing Pains, posted a photo on Instagram remembering his “TV dad.”
Leonardo DiCaprio even took to Facebook to mourn the loss the actor. He wrote:
Tracey Gold, who played his on-screen daughter, tweeted “I just can’t find the words right now.” Neither can we.
It is with a heavy heat that we read these memories of Alan Thicke. The cast of Growing Pains aren’t the only ones paying tribute to Thick. Many celebrities have come forward to express sadness over his death.
We wish Thicke’s family all the best during this time of mourning. And we’ll never forget how he touched all our hearts as Jason Seaver.
