Chris Evans has been playing Captain America for so long now, it’s hard to imagine him leaving the character. With his contract almost up, Chris is probably moving on from Steve Rodgers. Let’s all try not to burst into tears yet and try to be strong like Cap.

In his cover story interview with Esquire, Chris discussed his desire to play someone other than Steve Rodgers and the pain of training for the character. After his next two appearances as Captain America (in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Name TBD), his six-film contract will be up. Apparently, Marvel originally offered a nine-picture deal and Chris’ family thought he was crazy to insist on only six films, after which he will no longer be tied to Steve Rodgers — free to play new characters, like the more relatable Frank Adler in his upcoming film Gifted.

As Chris prepares for playing Captain America again (and potentially the last time, eek!), he is already sore from the intense fitness routine. And don’t forget that each film takes many months to films, leaving every little time for him to do other films or projects that he’s interested in. So yeah, we can understand why he might want to step back from the iconic and demanding character. Of course, that won’t make it any easier to see him leave.

Of course, Chris himself will remain a hero who stands up for those around him, even when he’s done playing Captain America. You can catch Chris Evans in his upcoming non-Marvel film Gifted, which will be in theaters April 12th.
