Best date ever? We think so. For last night’s AMAs, Demi Lovato took politician Danica Roem as her date. Roem has been in the news for an incredible reason — she became the first openly transgender elected official in the state of Virginia.

Earlier this month, Roem was elected to serve in Virginia’s House of Delegates, defeating and unseating Bob Marshall, who is known for supporting the anti-transgender bathroom bill and for homophobic and transphobic rhetoric. Her win proved that the people of Virginia are ready for change.

She’s a huge inspiration to Lovato, who reached out to her after hearing her story. Lovato told reporters on the red carpet that “[she’s] actually the first out and seated transgender state legislator in American history. When I heard that, I was just completely inspired by it.”

Lovato also said that she wanted Roem to be in the audience as she performed “Sorry Not Sorry,” a song about bullying — which is a platform that Roem is familiar with. “I wanted to have her in the audience with me tonight, because I feel like we’ve been through some of the same things. Now we get to share this experience together,” Lovato continued.

It seems like Roem is also a pretty big fan of Lovato, which makes the invite even more special.

The two met shortly before the ceremony, but we have a feeling they’ll be keeping in touch for quite a long time.
