Barack and Michelle Obama have been married for 24 years this October.
In 1989, Michelle Robinson was assigned to mentor summer associate Barack Obama at the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin.
(She was his boss!! Michelle Obama for President? Sadly, no. 🙁)
Shortly after their first meeting, they went on their first date.
“We spent the whole day together,” Michelle told the Washington Post. The date sounds like a microcosm of the two would come to represent for all Americans: stewards of the arts and community, enthusiasts of life’s finer pleasures, and passionate about social justice.
They lunched in the courtyard of the Art Institute of Chicago, toured the museum, had a drink on the 99th floor of the John Hancock building, and saw Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. The rounded out the night with a long walk down Michigan Avenue.
“He showed all the sides,” she said in a video. “He was hip. Cutting edge. Cultural. Sensitive…”
Now, entering their 25th year of marriage, Barack and Michelle Obama still looks almost exactly like they did at their wedding.
Strong as individuals, solid as a couple. We take their apparent respect for each other, support of each other’s passions and career aspirations, and love of family to be signs that LOVE is more than a four letter word. It’s the road to eternal life.
We think they’ve been drinking from the fountain of youth. And we’re pretty sure that just means smiling a lot, laughing a lot, remaining positive, and saying “I Love You,” as often as possible.
So, drink! And be young!
