Unfortunately, the Instagram trolls are back. On Friday, actress Ariel Winter clapped back to Instagram shamers yet again. Why? This time, over rude comments left on a picture of her with a bunch of her closest friends. You would think this picture would slip into the internetsphere relatively uncontroversially. A young woman hangs out with her friends, no big deal. But as the internet is wont to do, the trolls came for her because…she was wearing…wait for it…a pair of shorts. Whoa.
So of course, Winter came for the trolls right back. In the past, she’s shared advice for dealing with social media haters. This time, she penned an eloquent speech from her Notes app (her phone was at 100% — you go, girl) that called out body shamers and anyone else that feels they have the right to comment on her body.
It really, really sucks that female celebrities still have to put up with this kind of thing.
Unfortunately, Winter has dealt with more than her fair share of commentary about her body since entering the public eye as Alex on Modern Family. In 2015, she hit back body shamers on Instagram who who accused her of “asking for it” simply for wearing a bikini. In 2016, she got flack from body shamers for wearing a cutout graduation dress.
For women, especially celebrities, social media is a double-edged sword. It’s a chance to make fans feels closer to you, but it also exposes you to abusive comments. And it’s not so easy to just say, “Don’t read the comments.”
The worst thing is that the more Winter speaks out about this issue, the more she’s going to be targeted by hideous trolls who crave that reaction. She probably knows that. Yet, she continues to speak out about her body and the narratives around it.
That requires a good deal of strength, in our opinion. And for women, it’s a good reminder that you can put on your body whatever you damn well please.
