Sometimes, people misread the room. Really, seriously misread the room. In this case, Arie Luyendyk Jr. just posted a cruel April Fools‘ Day joke on social media, and unsurprisingly, people are pretty upset about it. Yesterday, the former race car driver-turned-Bachelor took to Instagram and Twitter to share the news that he and fiancée Lauren Burnham were pregnant — only to reveal it was only an April Fools joke a few hours later.
For starters, much of Bachelor nation is still feeling pretty raw about that very painful dumpster fire of a finale which saw Arie Luyendyk propose to Becca Kufrin, only to dump her on camera and decide to start a relationship with runner-up Burnham — whom he proposed to during the After the Final Rose special. That whole humiliating incident — not to mention his weird, ever-changing defense of filming his breakup with Kufrin — already turned Luyendyk into the biggest villain in Bachelor history, but the pregnancy “joke” brought things to a whole new level.
Bachelor drama aside, many took Luyendyk to task over his severe insensitivity to those struggling with fertility.
He initially tweeted,“Secrets finally out, we have a bunny in the oven! @laurenburnham91″ alongside what was presumably a shot of Burnham’s baby bump. But it was his giddy all caps reveal that it was all a joke that really had people riled up.
Former Bachelor contestant Melissa Rycroft was among the detractors, tweeting,”I have suffered from loss of a pregnancy, and have many friends who have struggled with infertility and loss of their babies. So when someone takes today to make a joke about a fake pregnancy, it shows a lack of empathy, class, and to be honest, just common sense. (Ahem…Arie..)”
Even those who didn’t really follow the Bachelor drama or considered themselves fans of the couple were shocked at Luyendyk’s complete lack of tact. Another Twitter user, a former fan of the couple, blasted them for their cruel “stunt,” tweeting, “Not like it actually matters but I can officially say that I am absolutely not a fan of Arie or Lauren anymore after their fake pregnancy stunt today. Anything for attention. DO THEY REALIZE THAT SOME PEOPLE WOULD DO ANYTHING TO GET PREGNANT, BUT CAN’T?!”
Arie, next time you think of a tweet that could be perceived as very cruel by a lot of people, maybe decide to not actually tweet it.
Somewhere in Seattle, Jason Mesnick is probably relishing in the fact that Arie is already leagues ahead of him as the biggest villain in Bachelor history, and Becca is breathing another sigh of relief, having dodged that bullet.
