9 celebrity breakups we didn’t see coming and will never recover from

How’s everyone doing with the news of the Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux split? Not great? Same. On Thursday, February 15th, the couple announced that they’re separating after two years of marriage. And the news shook us to our core. We did NOT see this coming, and love is officially dead. Okay, maybe we’re being a tad dramatic. But all we want is for Jennifer Aniston to be happy, whatever that means to her. Still, we really didn’t see this breakup coming. Which got us thinking about all the other times that celebrity breakups totally took us by surprise.

It’s always upsetting when a marriage ends. But there’s something about celebrity breakups that feels personal, even though we don’t actually know the people involved. Maybe it’s because when we see them in photos and interviews, we see the best and happiest parts of their relationships that they want to share. Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux aren’t the first celebrity couple to catch us off guard with the news of their split. Yet somehow, every time it happens, it hurts all over again. Let’s talk about some of the celebrity breakups that we TOTALLY didn’t see coming.

1Angelia Jolie and Brad Pitt

Speaking of Jennifer Aniston, we didn’t see her breakup with Brad Pitt coming. Well, maybe a little bit. (After all, we did see Mr. and Mrs. Smith.) But we DEFINITELY didn’t see Angelia Jolie and Brad Pitt’s breakup coming. They separated in September of 2016 after 12 years together.

2Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

Don’t get us wrong, we’re the biggest Eva Mendes + Ryan Gosling shippers on the planet. But a little part of us still mourns the breakup between Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. The two met while filming The Notebook in 2003, which has to be the most romantic meet-cute of all time. But they split a few years later in 2007.

3Anna Faris and Chris Pratt

For years, Anna Faris and Chris Pratt were the ultimate #relationshipgoals. They fell in love before they were famous! And lifted each other up as their careers took off! But alas, apparently all good things must come to an end. Faris and Pratt announced their split in August of 2017 after eight years of marriage. Reading Anna Faris’s memoir Unqualified helped us cope with their breakup, but it was still a tough one to stomach.

4Amy Poehler and Will Arnett

Breakups are even more difficult when a couple has kids. And Amy Poehler and Will Arnett, who split in September of 2012 after nine years of marriage, have two. But they’ve proven to be an awesome parenting team to their sons, Archie (9) and Abel (7).

5Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson

When Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson started dating in 2006, “SexyBack” by Justin Timberlake topped the charts. 30 Rock had only just begun its first season. And Britney Spears had just called it quits with Kevin Federline. Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson were together for 10 years! But they announced their breakup in July of 2016, and we were never the same again.

6Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney were engaged but ended things in July of 2016 after five years of dating. And we did NOT see it coming. About a year after ending her engagement to Kinney, Lady Gaga is now engaged to her former agent Christian Carino. We’re just glad everything worked out.

7Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe

Speaking of celebrity breakups that ended up working out, exes Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe are a great parenting team to their kids, Ava (18) and Deacon (14). But that doesn’t mean we weren’t shocked when they split in 2007.

8Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama

This celebrity breakup really hurt. Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama were together for six years. He stood by her side as she battled drug and alcohol addictions, bipolar disorder, and an eating disorder. Despite everything they went through together, the couple split in July of 2016.

9Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron

From the moment we learned Zac Efron’s name watching High School Musical, it was never just “Zac Efron.” It was always “Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.” They met on the set of the Disney Channel Original Movie and fell in love but ended things four years later in December of 2010.
