Ceci Bastida’s new video is here to make you dream of changing the world
Hailing from Tijuana, Mexico, Ceci Bastida, and her new video for “Un Sueño,” is here to help change the world. The Latinx singer has been using her voice to call the shots since she joined Tijuana No!, an activist punk ska band, in the early ’90s when she was only 15. Although her music career and voice have evolved, Ceci has not slowed down. Instead, she chooses to incorporate her philosophical beliefs into her art, creating an intricate collage of upbeat, modern sounds with smart content. In “Una Vez Más,” Ceci sings about gun violence from the first person perspective, a direct reaction to school shootings like The Sandy Hook shooting and Reynolds High School shooting in Oregon.
But it’s her latest song and video that are giving us life, and more importantly, hope.

“Un Sueño,” which translates to “a dream,” is all about facing what’s coming head on with an open heart and plenty of bravery. The song, which features Aloe Blacc, is both hypnotic and upbeat, starting with Spanish lyrics that translate to, “I only have a dream, I don’t have any fear.” The video itself is a lo-fi masterpiece, incorporating buggy film with bold colors — like a mix of a VHS tape and protest videos — creating a vaguely unnerving but beautiful visual. And with the message of helping someone else to help yourself and change the world, this is the pinnacle of who Ceci is — a rebel with a cause.
Art mirrors life, and by raising her voice to vocalize her disapproval, disscontent, or even hope, Ceci is also empowering young women and artists to do the same. It’s not easy to be a minority in the United States right now, and that’s why Ceci’s voice is more vital than ever.
It may be a dream to change the world, but that doesn’t mean it’s unattainable, and Ceci Bastida knows that.
