Cate Blanchett miiiiiiight be joining the Marvel movie universe
Is there any role that Cate Blanchett can’t play? Her impressive film resume spans everything from indie dramas, to big blockbusters, and six different Lord of the Rings movies. Earlier this year, she played the wicked stepmother in Cinderella; two days ago, she was nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe, for her role in Carol, where she plays a woman in the 1950s, who tumbles into a secret relationship with Rooney Mara’s Therese . So, short answer is no, there is no role Blanchett can’t play. Which is good, because next up, it looks like she’s headed to Asgard.
While on Earth, the Avengers are getting ready to square off against one another in Civil War, Thor’s got his own problems back home. It sounds like one of these problems might end up being Blanchett, who is currently in final negotiations to star in Thor alongside Chis Hemsworth (and Tom Hiddleston. Never forget Loki). It’s awesome enough to hear that Blanchett could be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s even more awesome to hear she might be playing the villain.
YES, rumor around Asgard is that she’ll be the villain for Thor: Ragnarok. For one, that would be absolutely amazing. And two, this would make Blanchett the first female villain in the MCU. According to IGN, Marvel was looking to “pursue a big name actress for Mystery Villainess—like Cate Blanchett big.” Instead of getting someone like Blanchett, it appears as if they’ve actually hooked the big fish herself.
Right now, it’s unclear who she’ll be playing (and this is still assuming that she signs on for the movie). There are actually a few female villains in Thor’s world, like Enchantress — not the DC/Suicide Squad/Cara Delevingne Enchantress — who at one point in the comics had a backstory where she was actually created by Loki to create chaos. Oh Loki, you’re so… Loki.
And now hopefully, this is a movie Blanchett is going to do. Adding “First Female Marvel Villain” to her acting resume would be superb. Then we can see what kind of destruction she causes when Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters on November 3rd, 2017
