This cat retirement home is filling our hearts with love

They say all dogs go to heaven, but what about our feline friends? Due in large part, perhaps, to sheer force of will and generally NGAF, many cats are outliving both their furry brethren and their human subordinates. Er, owners.

Which raises a very important question: Where do geriatric cats go when their humans go to heaven? (Or when their humans, for a variety of reasons, can no longer offer them a home? Sad face.

In the case of the Lincolnshire Trust For Cats, they go to a retirement home. We’re going to repeat that, and then allow it a second to sink in. A retirement home. For cats.

The trust offers aged British cats the true royal treatment: a sprawling sanctuary in Osgodby, Lincolnshire, UK in which to retire peacefully and live out their remaining days in comfort and relaxation. All a retiring cats needs to move in is an admissions fee of £850 (approximately $1,250) and a will, written by the kitty’s human, outlining their needs and provisions. The accommodations sound quite luxe.

Consider this description of the home’s perks from their website:

Replace the word “cat” with, say, “your grandma” and this place sounds cushier than many homes to which our two-legged family members retire. An insulated house for an introverted resident, you say? Endless opportunities to sunbathe while enjoying meals catered to your specifications? We just have one question: WHEN CAN WE MOVE IN?

Of course, you don’t have to get your cat a passport in order to ensure that they’ll retire in comfort. We did a little digging and, to our delight, the cat retirement home is a thing that totally exists right here in the U.S. of A.

One, the Sunshine Home in Honeoye, NY, offers, among other amenities, a common room with a television, cat walks and various cat furniture. Their website has an entire section devoted to celebrating their residents’ birthdays. Particularly picky residents can choose to furnish their luxury rooms as they please—apparently two new retirees once arrived with their own La-Z-Boy recliner. Swag.

So there you have it. As we see it, all animals go to heaven. . ..but only a select few make a stop at a swanky retirement home on their way there.
