The cast of ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ just got even MORE amazing, if that’s possible

There’s an unfortunate dearth of women (and particularly women of color) directors at the helm of major movies in Hollywood – that’s just an indisputable, albeit upsetting, fact. So you can imagine how thrilled we were to learn that the incredible Ava DuVernay (director of 2014’s Selma) would be directing the upcoming long-in-development adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. Not only is DuVernay an enormously talented (and now history-making) director – the book is one of our absolute favorite childhood classics. It’d already gotten the movie treatment once, back in the early aughts, but that version didn’t quite gel with critics or longtime fans of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic sci-fi/fantasy book series.

Our anticipation only heightened when we learned that Frozen screenwriter Jennifer Lee (emphasizing a “strong, female-driven narrative“) would be penning the adaptation and when key roles started being cast. Over the summer, we found out that none other than Oprah Winfrey would be joining the cast as Mrs. Which, one-third of the mysterious trio of ancient beings who effectively set our protagonists off on their journey. Just a month ago, we found out that Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling would be rounding out that trio, playing Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who respectively. Also in September, we found out that Storm Reid (best known for her role in 12 Years a Slave) had won the lead role of Meg Murry.

How could this casting get any better, one might wonder? Well, funny you should ask…

Variety and Deadline have reported the news that Meg Murry’s parents have been cast – with two enormously talented actors.

The stunning Gugu Mbatha-Raw will be playing scientist Dr. Kate Murry, Meg’s mother.

Our favorite Star Trek captain Chris Pine will be starring opposite Mbatha-Raw as microbiologist Alex Murry, Meg’s father.

It’s the disappearance of Meg’s father that sets the child protagonists off on their intergalactic adventure. There’s no word yet on casting news for Charles Wallace, Meg’s precocious younger brother, or Calvin O’Keefe, Meg’s friend.

So, basically, it’s been an amazing week for A Wrinkle in Time casting news. Now, when is this movie set to release – or, heck, even to start filming? We’re all impatiently waiting for it!
