This cashier’s simple act of kindness is going viral

Earlier this week, a cashier at a Meijer supermarket let a little boy help her scan some groceries at the checkout counter. That small gesture has now become a shining example of how a simple act of kindness can touch someone in a meaningful way.

Kimberly Grandinette and her 3-year-old son were in cashier Kristen C’s checkout line when Kimberly told Kristen about her infant son who is in the hospital. According to a post Kimberly shared on Facebook, “I was telling the cashier (Kristen C) that my infant son is in the hospital right now and that my three year old is having a pretty rough time with all of the changes in routine and changes at home it is causing. Then my three year old asked Kristen if he could help her ring our groceries. She looked at my son and said, ‘Certainly’ and brought him behind the register with her.”

Kimberly snapped a picture of Kristen holding the little boy and letting him help with the whole checkout process. She later posted the picture to the Meijer store’s Facebook page, and used the caption to explain just how much that kind gesture meant to her son. “She was so patient with him as she let him help her scan the coupons and she made him feel like a million bucks. He skipped out of the store with a smile on his face. Thank you, Kristen, for making my son’s day (and my day!) a bit brighter. Merry Christmas!!”

The post has since gone viral, accumulating nearly 150,000 likes and over 10,000 shares. Kristen’s own mom has even seen the post and left this proud comment: “That’s my wonderful daughter, I’m so Thankful for her taking the time to make his day because that’s how she is and I’m Thankful for you to notice. Happy Holidays to you and your family.”

Kristen’s mom is right. Kristen is wonderful! We love people like her, who go out of their way to be nice to total strangers. We also love people like Kimberly who go on to share how a little kindness can go a long way. Their whole encounter just goes to show that you never know what’s going on with the people you come across every day. Life can be hard. And sometimes a kind word, a simple act, or even just a smile could be exactly what someone needs.
