Carrie Fisher just told us all exactly what she thinks of the Princess Leia gold bikini controversy

Say the words “Princess Leia gold bikini” and we immediately conjure an image of Carrie Fisher from Return of the Jedi. That costume is iconic– seen at many a Comic-Con, Halloween party, and posters in Gen X teenage bedrooms. Heck, even Friends had an episode about it: the costume is that famous.

However, that costume came under attack this week when father Fred Hill of Philadelphia went on the news and declared an action figure of Princess Leia in the gold bikini “inappropriate,” adding, “I got two daughters I don’t need seeing that crap.” Let’s be honest: this dad sounds like all our dads.

Carrie Fisher, never one to back down from a fight, has been voicing her own objections to the sudden controversy that has risen around this iconic image. And she’s declared this whole debate “stupid.” Succinct, right? She recently told the Los Angeles Times: “How about telling his daughter that the character is wearing that outfit not because she’s chosen to wear it. She’s been forced to wear it. She’s a prisoner of a giant testicle who has a lot of saliva going on and she does not want to wear that thing and it’s ultimately that chain, which you’re now indicating is some sort of accessory to S&M, that is used to kill the giant saliva testicle…. That’s asinine.”

While Fisher believes children are old enough to understand the complications surrounding the outfit, and how a very smart and self-sufficient Princess Leia managed to use the clothing meant to enslave her to free herself, it seems Disney, fearful of alienating consumers, has already begun to pull the action figure from shelves, making concerned fathers everywhere emit sighs of relief. It looks like Disney lacks Carrie Fisher’s bravado. Of course, what we should all really be wondering is why there are so many Han Solo and Luke Skywalker action figures, and so few Princess Leia ones. Hopefully Disney, in rectifying the gold bikini problem, will address this concern, as well!
