Carrie Fisher gives Daisy Ridley ‘Star Wars’ advice (specifically, “fight” the gold bikini)
If you don’t know the name Daisy Ridley, soon enough you will. You’ll also start seeing her absolutely everywhere — from commercials, to toys, to boxes of cereal, probably — since she’s about to make her big screen debut in what is most certainly going to be the biggest movie of the year if not the DECADE. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in a short 48 days (official countdown), and soon it’s going to be all Force Awakens all the time. Not that we’re complaining.
It must be hard going from zero to light speed literally over night, but thankfully Ridley had one special person on set to help her through everything: Carrie Fisher. Though she might not want to be the Godmother of all things Star Wars, that is the role she’s taken on over the years, especially when it comes to the brand new crew joining the saga.
For an upcoming interview in Interview magazine, Fisher talked with Ridley over the phone while they’re both in the middle of doing Star Wars stuff. They discuss all things SW, what it’s like to try and deal with the fame, and that whole Princess Leia bikini situation. Also, Fisher is the best interviewer in the world, and should be in charge of the entire press junket for Force Awakens.
Sticking with the Halloween theme of the week, the two discuss what it’s like to be Halloween costumes, and Fisher is so excited to “have someone to talk about it with.” It must be a weird sight to see a gaggle of little girls all dressed up as you, but Ridley’s thrilled every time she sees it.
With regards to another iconic Star Wars costume, Fisher drops some serious wisdom. First, she responds to the claim that the movie mad her a so-called “sex symbol. “I am not a sex symbol, so that’s an opinion of someone,” says Fisher. “I don’t share that.” Then, she warns Ridley “you should fight for your outfit,” adding, “Don’t be a slave like I was.” Fisher is of course referring to the gold “slave Leia” bikini she wore in Return of the Jedi, which hyper-sexualized Fisher’s role and, by her own account in past interviews, was super-uncomfortable.
“You keep fighting against that slave outfit,” Fisher tells Ridley. “Alright, I’ll fight,” Ridley promises.
As for her crushes from the original Star Wars films, Ridley explains that, duh, it’s Fisher because she’s a “a kick-ass woman” and “paved the way for all the girls.” Princess Leia was the OG space heroine after all.
The entire back and forth between the two of them is worth a read, and you can check it out here. As for when where we’ll see these two of these ladies being awesome next, that’s on the big screen when Force Awakens opens on December 18th.
