Carrie Brownstein and Amy Poehler threw a wedding for two fans, and our hearts exploded
Quick, if you absolutely had to have a celebrity at your wedding, who would be your pick? Chances are, if you’re like us, Carrie Brownstein and Amy Poehler would be pretty high up on that list — after all, who wouldn’t want either comedian on hand to lovingly document the entire affair? (Brownstein’s band Sleater-Kinney could even play.) But for one lucky couple, they didn’t have to make that choice, because both Poehler and Brownstein were at their wedding. And, the latter officiated it. We’ll give you a moment to process that information.
Brownstein’s currently on tour promoting her new memoir, Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl, and has recently been stopping by a bunch of U.S. cities to chat about the book with some famous friends. Previous friend-guests on the tour included actress Gaby Hoffman, writer and editor Jessica Hopper, and musician Questlove, but for the Los Angeles stop of the tour, which was (this is important) held at a church, she grabbed none other than Leslie Kno—err, Amy Poehler, to discuss memoir writing, fandom, and General Hospital. (As one does.)
But when it came time for the audience Q&A, one fan instead offered up a request: Kendall had heard, via a friend at a previous book store stop, that Brownstein was an ordained minister; could she (Brownstein) possibly preside over Kendall and her partner Genevieve’s wedding, and could this possibly happen after the Q&A? The two had already received their marriage certificate; the only thing left was a ceremony to commemorate their love.
After the crowd’s roaring approval died down, Poehler herself told Brownstein to accept. And thus, possibly the best elopement ever went down: Poehler played bits and pieces of “Greensleeves” for music, made bouquets out of the stage setup for the happy couple, and generally fangirled hard, while Brownstein delivered an amazing address for Kendall and Genevieve. The entire event was a wonderful cap on an evening of sharing and caring, via two of our favorite public figures:
Ugh, our hearts are absolutely bursting with joy. Congratulations Kendall and Genevieve on your amazing wedding and your clearly beautiful love, and a round of applause for both Poehler’s excellent music and Brownstein’s on-the-fly ministering. (It was actually the musician’s first wedding; she’d gotten officiated for an event a few weeks in the future.)
Watch a full video of the ceremony below. And if you’re a Sleater-Kinney/Portlandia fan looking to get hitched — Brownstein still has a couple of stops left.
