Carly Rae Jepsen’s Christmas classic cover is giving us all those holiday vibes
Carly Rae Jepsen’s sophomore album Emotion was basically an early holiday gift for pop music fans, but as the tinsel-fueled sparkle of the holiday season approaches, Jepsen’s unleashed her own addition to the holiday canon: A slowed down, sax-filled cover of Wham!’s Christmas heartbreak capital-J Jam “Last Christmas.”
Stereogum pointed out that this isn’t Jepsen’s first foray into the holiday music market; her original tune “Mittens,” however, isn’t quiiite a winner. So, following the long tradition of pop stars getting into the holiday spirit, she opted this year to tackle the best Christmas break-up song of all time: “Last Christmas,” which has also been reinvented by many artists, including Ariana Grande, Jimmy Eat World, Ashley Tisdale, and um, Cascada?
Jepsen’s version is less spritely than the original, instead opting for the kind of warm-glazed sound that coated many of her recent songs (namely, “Warm Blood“). While other renditions of the song — including the original — were meant for hairbrush karaoke, this version if perhaps for sipping mulled wine in front of a roaring fireplace, burning your ex’s stuff. Kidding! But really, Jepsen’s instinct to not go full throttle with the vocals keeps her version fresh. Listen to it below:
