Carly Rae Jepsen and 6 other artists who seriously conquered the sophomore slump

It’s catchy. It’s upbeat. It’s really (really, really, really) good. Carly Rae Jepsen is back in the game and may have just outdone herself with what is already on track to be one of the hottest songs of the year. She dropped her latest single, “I Really Like You,” last night and let’s just say this is definitely going to be one of those can’t-get-it-out-of-your-head-if-you-tried jams, just like her first hit, “Call Me Maybe” (which may be one of the catchiest songs of all time). Now, if you’re thinking, “There’s NO way Carly could possibly outdo ‘Call Me Maybe,’” listen to her new track before you pass judgment. We’re sure you’ll really like it (pun 100% intended).

And since we’re on the topic of artists, just like Carly Rae, totally outdoing themselves and conquering the tough battle that is the sophomore slump, here are 6 other artists who released a second single that we loved just as much (or even, dare we say, more) than their first big hits:

1. “Lips Are Movin’” by Meghan Trainor

Meghan Trainor’s catchy “All About That Bass” followed a path similar to “Call Me Maybe” when it hit radio stations and people literally didn’t know what to do with themselves, it was so good. But Meghan’s second single was just as catchy and sassy as dat bass was. ALL HAIL MEGS.

2. “Teardrops on My Guitar” by Taylor Swift

What list would be complete without an appearance by Taylor Swift? Her very first single, “Tim McGraw,” began her pop-country career, but it was her second single that had us literally spilling teardrops on our guitar. What can we say, the girl’s got a way with words!

3. “SOS” by Rihanna

When Rihanna released her first single, “Pon de Replay,” what we thought was a game changer, was only the beginning for her. Then came “SOS,” which literally had us yelling “save our souls,” as we could barely handle all the amazingness. Four for you RiRi, you go RiRi!

4. “One Thing” by One Direction

Admit it: You died and went to British Boybander Heaven when One Direction’s first hit “What Makes You Beautiful” flowed through your ears like a peaceful river flowing on a sunny day. How could they possibly release anything better than this masterpiece? That’s when “One Thing” hit radio stations and Directioners RIP-ed even harder, if that’s even possible. Countless No. 1 hits later and 1D is still dominating the charts.

5. “Lego House” by Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran was a completely unknown artist when he released his first single “The A Team” in 2011. But after his debut of “Lego House” shortly after, the world literally fell head over heels for the British red-head and his sweet serenades. Now don’t even get us started on “Thinking Out Loud…” Swoon, Ed.

6. “Realize” by Colbie Caillat

You know when you felt all giddy and lovey-dovey the first time you heard Colbie Caillat’s first single, “Bubbly?” Did you ever think you’d feel just as, let alone MORE happy when her single “Realize” was released? Yeah, that happened. Her adorable lyrics and ultra-soothing voice made for an insanely successful second single release, and made for an even better cuddle sesh. Now if only Colbie could sing us to sleep every night…
