Carly Rae Jepsen’s best song now has a music video
Though Carly Rae Jepsen’s new album E•MO•TION isn’t coming out until August 21 in America (Japan has it already, lucky ducks), we’ve been hearing bits and pieces of the album for months now. But now, what’s arguably the best track the singer’s ever recorded is out with a video, a shaky cam home movie montage that’s guaranteed to make you feel nostalgia and a heady rush of e•mo•tions, all at once.
Think I’m exaggerating? “Run Away With Me,” the first track of the album, opens with a triumphant saxophone clarion call and then only becomes more breathless in its emotional flight. The stage is set with subdued background synths and then Jepsen’s sweetly sincere voice rushes in, delivering lyrics like “Cause you make me feel like / I could be driving you all night / And I’ll find your lips in the streetlights / I wanna be there with you.” What follows is the best song you’ll ever hear about spontaneous romance, when you lock eyes with someone and without words, you know — it’s now or never.
There are moments when the song feels like it’s suggesting something a little less innocent—”I’ll be your sinner in secret / when the lights go out”—but then three minutes into the song, it stops and hovers in some sonic suspension. In the breakdown that follows, “Run Away With Me” escalates from okay to amazing to I’m going to scream this with the windows down.
Right before the final chorus, Jepsen unleashes “Oh, my baby!” and it’ll give you total goosebumps. When her voice takes over the repeated opening saxophone motif for a line, you’ll find yourself thinking, “This is genius.” Call me always, Carly Rae Jepsen.
The video for “Run Away With Me” tries to embody the “let’s go” feeling expressed by the song, and it mostly works. That said, the song almost demands something grander, something as bombastic as a song that acts as a passionate call to action and also an ostentatious deployment of saxophone.
