Cards Against Humanity awesomely steps up for young women in science

It turns out the team behind the “party game for horrible people” happens to be pretty darn great.

Cards Against Humanity was already our go-to, wildly inappropriate card game — but now it’s gotten a whole lot cooler. They just launched an science-themed expansion pack that will donate all profits to full-ride scholarships for women seeking undergrad degrees in STEM fields.

The game is essentially a NSFW version of Apples to Apples, where the most offensive cards tend to win. The new science pack — which they’re selling for $10 online — has thirty new cards to delight all your nerdy friends with.

With Zach Weinersmith of the Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal comics on the team that wrote the deck (he designed the cover too), it’s sure to be LMAO-levels of funny. One reviewer’s favorite is “Failing the Turing test,” though I’m personally partial to “Getting really worried about global warming for a few seconds.” (Check out the deck here.)

In all seriousness though, this news is nothing to joke about — the pack has already raised over $280,000 in less than a week after sales began. That’s money that’s going to make a real difference in the lives of young women aspiring for STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering, and math).

And this won’t just make a difference for those girls — getting more women in science is good for our entire society. While 74% of teen girls show interest in science and math, women represent only 24% of the nation’s STEM careers. This expansion pack is so important not just because it will be funding individual women, but because its existence makes women in STEM across the country feel more welcomed.

Applications will start with the 2016 school year, and will be reviewed by a board of 40 awesome women in the sciences. And in case this wasn’t awesome enough, the application is open to anyone in high school or college who identifies as female “in a way that’s significant to them.” Yay for inclusivity!
