Cara Delevingne opens up about going bald

Although the beauty and fashion industries are slowly starting to cater to people of all shapes, sizes, and colors, there’s still a long way to go. We tend to associate beauty with classically “feminine” traits, and this is especially true for hair. But thankfully, this too is changing.
The buzzcut is having a major moment, allowing women and femmes to reclaim their beauty in a way they see fit. And who better than Cara Delevingne, an outspoken actress and model, to take to Instagram to talk about the heavy-hitting truth of societal expectations when it comes to hair?
Cara shaved her head for her role in Life in a Year, and has been photographed with her freshly bald head, which she wore painted silver to the Met Gala. In the photo she posted on Instagram, Cara asks questions like: “Who are we? How are we defining beauty? What do we see as beautiful?”
Beauty is a social construct, so it’s up to us to continue to evolve and re-define what it is. In our eyes, the things that can make someone beautiful are their passion, their love, and everything on the inside that makes them feel beautiful.
This reminds us of a famous episode of The Twilight Zone, called “Eye of the Beholder.” A woman is having her last surgery to make her look “normal.” At the end of the episode, you see she’s actually the “beautiful” one and all the doctors and nurses have pig noses. The woman having the surgery is sent off to a ghetto to live with other people “like her.” Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?
We love that Cara is openly talking about such deep issues, while reminding us that having fun with how you look can also be its own form of healing.
