Cool, now Gwendoline Christie is hinting that Captain Phasma might be alive in the next “Star Wars”
In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Captain Phasma’s fate looked pretty clear, right? The movie seemed to make it obvious that she fell to a fiery death after being defeated by John Boyega’s character, Finn. It was a bummer to see Gwendoline Christie’s badass Captain Phasma seemingly bid her final farewell, but it was a pretty awesome moment of retribution for Finn after he suffered what seemed to be a great deal of abuse at Phasma’s hands.
Apparently, we weren’t the only ones bummed to see such a formidable baddie meet her end so quickly. Christie herself expressed in an interview with The Times that she’s not quite yet ready to say goodbye to the character. So does that mean that there’s a chance that Phasma survived?
For her part, Christie isn’t sure…but hopes she did.
"In truth, I don’t know. And that scares and upsets me because I really want to see this character explored. I’m actually very invested in the character now. And that’s genuine. That’s not just chat. It has opened up a chain of stories and events in my mind about who Phasma is."
Of course, this isn’t the first time Phasma has survived what seemed to be a fatal accident. In Force Awakens, we left Phasma in the trash compactor at Starkiller Base. While we know that you can definitely survive a trash compactor if you’re clever enough — thanks, A New Hope! — Phasma’s fiery fall seems a bit more challenging to brush off.
However, we too have been considering the new story possibilities with Phasma, especially since Delilah S. Dawson’s book Phasma hit bookshelves in 2017. There absolutely is a lot more to Captain Phasma’s backstory that we’d love to be able to learn about and explore (especially since she was hardly in The Last Jedi at all), should she find a way to survive the events of The Last Jedi.
Of course, this is Star Wars we’re talking about, so we probably won’t know anything for certain until Episode IX hits theaters in December 2019. But we’re definitely curious to see if she’ll make a comeback!
