“Captain Marvel” is officially in production — and you won’t believe which dead character is coming back

Get excited, Carol Corps, because Marvel has announced that Captain Marvel is now officially in production, which means we’re just *that much closer* to the film hitting big screens! The film’s principal photography is kicking off in the greater Los Angeles area, but shooting is also scheduled in Fresno, Baton Rogue, and New Orleans. What’s more, Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s, which is a currently unexplored time period of the MCU, so not only can we expect some grunge fashion and The Rachel haircut, we can also expect to see some familiar faces return to the MCU.

Most notably, we’ll get to see the triumphant return of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) to Marvel films in Captain Marvel.

We haven’t seen Coulson in the MCU since his “death” in Avengers, but he’s been anchoring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson has always brought a great deal of heart, empathy, and humanity to the world of superheroes, so we’re so excited to see him back in action on the big screen! We already knew that Nick Fury would be making an appearance in Captain Marveland we’re really excited to see this friendly face come back into action in the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Captain Marvel will tell the story of how Carol Danvers becomes the title hero, played by Brie Larson, while the Earth is getting caught in an intergalactic war between two alien races. Because of that space-war, we’ll get to see *another familiar face* in Captain Marvel: Lee Pace will be reprising his role as Ronan from Guardians of the Galaxy!

Ronan is a Kree zealot, and in the Captain Marvel comics, we see the Kree battling against the Skrulls.

Skrulls can shapeshift and are set to be the villains in Captain Marvel, so with the return of Ronan, it stands to reason that the two warring alien races will be the Kree and the Skrulls. Introducing the Skrulls in a big way is likely to reveal a whole new, unexplored part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and since Captain Marvel is set to be one of the films to usher in the new era of the MCU, we’re excited to see what new sections of the MCU this movie will unlock.

We still have a bit of a wait for Captain Marvel‘s March 8th, 2019 release. But with production underway, we’re just one step closer to seeing it!
