This 16-year-old cancer survivor’s “America’s Got Talent” performance gives us full-body chills

You never know quite what you’re going to get when performers take to the America’s Got Talent stage, but sometimes it’s pure magic. Something magical is exactly what happened when 16-year-old cancer survivor Calysta Bevier stepped up to the microphone.

While introducing herself Calysta told the audience that she was a survivor of stage 3 ovarian cancer, but that she wanted her performance to remind people, “no matter what you’ve gone through, keep chasing your dreams.” Then she started in on what is 100% the most perfect song for her: “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten.

The whole performance was gorgeous but the lyrics took on extra special meaning when Calysta sang, “This is my fight song/ Take back my life song/ Prove I’m alright song.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

Notoriously surly judge Simon Cowell, was obviously moved by the performance, giving Calysta the coveted “golden buzzer” which means she was moved straight through to the live semi-finals.

“I love everything about you,” Cowell told her. “I just had this feeling when you walked out, I can’t explain it — just your spirit, the choice of song, your voice. I think you’re really special.”

Calysta has sung “Fight Song” on TV before. In December on The Ellen Show she was joined by Rachel Platten herself for a duet. Calysta told Ellen that she really related to “Fight Song” when she was going through chemo, and we can totally understand why.

This is pure and beautiful proof of the power of music.
