This is why Camila Mendes doesn’t discuss her IRL romance with costar Charles Melton

Most Riverdale stans are well aware of the IRL romance between costars Camila Mendes (Veronica) and Charles Melton (Reggie Mantle). The pair first met when Melton joined the cast in Season 2 (replacing OG Reggie, Ross Butler) and have been an item almost ever since. They share the occasional cute snap on social media and sometimes appear together on friends’ feeds…but Mendes almost never discusses her relationship in public. And she has a valid reason.

"In my day-to-day life, I am an open book," Camila said in a March 1st interview with LA Confidential Magazine. "But I’ve also developed this sixth sense. I understand how my spoken words can translate into written words and how things can appear out of context.

She continued, “It’s like, yeah, even though I feel comfortable talking about some things, do I really want to see it written over and over again? Sometimes, it’s not really worth it.” She also noted that she never lets her personal relationship interfere with her job or vice-versa. “The show is fictional. I don’t have an attachment to it. All [I’m attached] to is my character. Whatever direction the writers take, I will make it work. I am adaptable. I always make it work.”

Mendes and Melton aren’t the only real-life Riverdale couple who choose to stay largely mum about their personal lives. Lili Reinhard and Cole Sprouse (aka Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones) don’t discuss their relationship with news outlets either. “It’s called a private life for a reason—it’s mine and it’s special and sacred,” Reinhart once told Seventeen. “My relationships are between me and whomever I’m with, not between me and the world.”

At the end of the day, no one has a right to details about the personal lives of others—regardless of whether or not they’re in the public eye. We’re fine with Mendes sharing (or not sharing) as she sees fit.
