Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello celebrates trans fan’s name change with the cutest shoutout
Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello celebrated her 18th birthday yesterday with the help of celeb friends like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, but the singer is also in the news for revealing a heart-warming and inspiration story that perfectly illustrates a positive celeb-fan bond.
Cabello posted a picture with a gorgeous young woman and wrote in the caption that she’d met the fan a year before: as a trans woman named Joey looking to start her transition. A year later, the two met again, both as Camila’s — for Joey had become Camila Joe, newly named for the idol who’d inspired her to begin her transition.
Cabello’s caption reads:
In a world where people still don’t understand the implications of misgendering or speculating about a person’s gender, it’s huge that a pop star spoke so eloquently and enthusiastically in support of a trans fan. And, despite the fact that social media is littered with trolls of every kind, the comments on the photo are overwhelmingly positive. We’re still a long way away from complete cultural understanding, but public figures like Cabello help support the LGBTQ community when they speak out, and can clearly influence fans’ lives for the better.
